To do this at the cutting edge of science and technology requires a reliable network between manufacturers of rolled products, science and research, and suppliers of production equipment and operating materials. The Expert Committee Rolling provides a platform for this complex task.
Rolling is a production process in which mostly metallic materials are formed between two or more rotating tools. The subject area covers the economical production, finishing, and packaging of rolled products with the parallel generation of the best possible material properties. A key objective of the industry is to secure and expand its current leading position in the global market for semifinished product manufacture, in particular through scientific research and further industrial developments. To meet this requirement by the latest scientific and technological standards, the industry needs a reliable network between the scientific community and producers of rolled products, suppliers of production equipment, and manufacturers of operating materials. The Expert Committee provides a platform for this complex task of bringing together industry and scientific research.
Since 1970, the work has been carried out under the umbrella of the DGM, with more than 200 members actively contributing today. Focal topics are dealt with in separate working groups. Currently, the three active Working Groups - Flatness Measurement and Control, Thermoprocess Technology, and Roll Plating - deal with corresponding topics from research and industrial practice. If necessary, topics from research and industrial practice are dealt with in separate working groups for a limited period, as exemplified by the Working Group "Zero Defect Philosophy for Rolled Products - Possibilities and Limits", whose work resulted in the brochure "Zero Defect Philosophy for Nonferrous Rolled Products".
