Materials are classified by chemical composition, crystal and microstructure, and macroscopic properties. Interactions between microstructure, processing and mechanical, thermal and electrical behavior determine suitability for applications. Material selection considers performance requirements, availability, lifetime and is supported by modeling and characterization techniques.
